As Jake grew up he was like any other boy his age, rough housing with his brothers and enjoying sports. When he was 7, Jake began to complain about pain he felt at night in his leg. Naturally, we thought they were just the growing pains, as his father had experienced them as a child; however, when the pain did not diminish after three or four weeks, we took him to our family doctor. Jake’s doctor believed that he was merely experiencing growing pains, but thought to be on the safe side he would refer us to a pediatric orthopedic specialist who took x-rays after slightly squeezing his leg and realizing there was still slight pain in his calf. The doctor confirmed that he had broken his leg at least a month prior to the visit and that Jake had fibrous dysplasia. From there he referred us to specialists at Hershey Medical Hospital. There we were seen by a group of physicians; Dr. William Parrish, Dr. James R. Kerrigan, Dr. Fred G. Fedok and Dr. Peter A. Lee.
This was November of 2003, the beginning of our long venture to diagnosis whatever was wrong with his Jake. The x-rays clearly showed some sort of a milky mass throughout the bone in his leg. Our first appointment at Hershey Medical Center was with an orthopedic surgeon. He took x-rays of his leg, and suggested that a full body bone scan be performed.
